The video games trade fair is held annually at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Until 2008, it was held in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. But it now seems Gamescom 2020 will be a special one for Asia.
Earlier this morning, (May 29), Gamescom organizer “Koelnmesse” and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) signed a memorandum of understanding. Koelnmesse and STB have announced a partnership for Gamescom 2020. The next Gamescom will be held in Singapore in 2020.
STB chief executive Keith Tan gave more details about the partnership. Official discussions with Koelnmesse began two years ago. Both parties aimed to develop an Asian spin-off. In planning, STB and Koelnmesse consulted with several stakeholders like the Infocomm Media Development Authority, Enterprise Singapore, industry associations, game developers and organizers of local and global Esports events.
“Apart from adding vibrancy to our events calendar, we aim for Gamescom Asia to position Singapore as the natural base for the development and commercialization of digital and gaming content, which in turn will support our digital media industry,” said Keith Tan.
Managing director of Koelnmesse Singapore, Mathias Kuepper, told the media that Gamescom Asia will be held at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre in 2020.
Kuepper added that Asia has been hungry for a “tier one gaming event” of this scale. Gamescom is expecting to attract over 30,000 enthusiasts and gaming industry professionals in 2020.
The Singapore Tourism Board noted in a statement: “There will be business opportunities for both local and regional companies as the event will allow them to tap into the region’s flourishing and lucrative gaming market.”
Indeed, this is exciting news. Gamescom Asia 2020 could be a huge door opener for game developers based in Asia. Indie developers based in Asia can also take advantage of an event of this magnitude being held so close to them
