Valve founder and president Gabe Newell recently slipped Half-Life 3 joke into his speech making everyone believe once again that the game is in development. Apparently, Half-Life 3 is a joke to Newell and it’s not coming anytime soon.
At the recent Valve Index party of new Index VR headset, Newell made a joke in front of employees that simultaneously excites and disappoints Half-Life series fans.
Here’s what Newell co-founder and big boss at Valve said:
Milestones aren’t really the end of anything. They’re really the beginning. So Half-Life led to Half-Life 2, Source led to Source 2, the experiments that we did with Team Fortress 2 were what enabled us to build Dota. Artifact is the reason we’re able to do Underlords.
So, maybe someday the number 2 will lead us to that shiny integer glowing on a mountain someplace… we’ll just have to see.
As expected, there wasn’t any mention of Half-Life 3 but he did tease while talking about the magical number 3 that Valve can make it happen someday.
Now that’s not a confirmation of Half-Life 3 but a tease, a hint or maybe nothing but a joke. Interested folks can check out the video below from Sinclair below to hear Newell hint towards the next entry of Half-Life. Players should skip to 2 minute 30-second mark in order to hear Newell’s comments.
As for the question: will Half Life 3 ever happen? We really don’t know. Half-Life 2 released back in 2004 so it will be very tough for the developers to bring the next entry on new generation consoles with an updated story to attract fans.
For those who don’t know Half-Life was a first-person shooter video game developed by Valve Corporation using the source engine. Players took the role of protagonist Gordon Freeman in both games of Half Life series.
As for now, Half-Life fans can do nothing but wait. Given that we are at the end of current-generation consoles like PS4 and Xbox One, we can expect Half-Life 3 to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett.
