Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Timed Exclusivity Period Revealed

In the past several years, Square Enix has gone back and forth on the matter of just how Final Fantasy 7 Remake will eventually release. The original announcement from 2015 pegged the game to be coming first to PlayStation 4. However, earlier this year, the developer stated that Final Fantasy 7 Remake would be a permanent PlayStation 4 exclusive and not release for other platforms.

Suffice to say, the overall situation led to much confusion. Thankfully, a decisive answer has now finally been given which sets the record straight.

The official box art of Final Fantasy VII Remake was released by Square Enix back in September. The same box art was updated earlier today with a disclaimer that the game will be exclusive to PlayStation 4 until March 3, 2021. That makes Final Fantasy VII Remake a PlayStation 4 exclusive for a full year before releasing for Xbox One. That being said, the updated box art makes no mention of any releases exactly a year later, and whether the developer is planning a PC release or not.

Square Enix opting for a timed exclusivity window is hardly surprising. The developer previously partnered with Microsoft for a similar deal that made Rise of the Tomb Raider a one-year exclusive game on Xbox One. Hence, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is just Sony stepping in for some platform payback.

Square Enix will probably reveal more about Final Fantasy 7 Remake (and the exclusivity deal) in the coming months. Most recently, the developer confirmed the inclusion of the squats mini-game, something that made the original great. In addition, Square Enix is including a classic mode that will make party members fight automatically, leaving players to just sit and watch until the meter fills so that they can start making use of abilities.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake releases on March 3, 2020, exclusively on PlayStation 4. You can pre-order the game right now on Amazon.
