DICE Reveals its Ambition For Battlefield 4 eSports

DICE intends to make an impact on the eSports scene with their new release, Battlefield 4. It is an ambitious venture especially now that the eSports market has started booming.

We reported earlier of how focused the DICE team was on improving the single player campaign of the game, by giving more autonomy and more open world environments. There was no word about the multiplayer at that point, but it seems that team is equally dedicated to improving the multiplayer, something the Battlefield series is known for.

DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson revealed the details to famed user Luetin09 in a Youtube interview:

“Multiplayer is the heart of any Battlefield game that we do. That won’t change moving forward

I can’t talk about the specifics because we’re not announcing them, but I can say that e-sports is an area that we are very interested in.”

He went on to talk about eSports in general,

“not as easy as some game developers like to think, that it’s just you do ‘x, y and z’ and everything is done – it’s actually much bigger than that now.

“There are some people that actually see this as a new phenomena, and that’s not true either. For the people that have been involved in this scene it’s been around for a long time. It’s just recently that it’s really started to take off more in semi-mainstream, online media etc. which is amazingly cool by the way.

“So yes, we’re very interested in this area, and we’re definitely going to see what we can do there.”

No actual information about the multiplayer has been announced but we can get a pretty good idea of the direction DICE is taking, possibly taking inspiration from the eSports success of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. There won’t be a co-op mode either, it seems that the team wants to put all their resources into bringing the elements of competition and playability in the multiplayer.
