“Death Stranding, A Walking Simulator” — Kojima Hits Back

Hideo Kojima is well aware of the fact that the internet has been calling out Death Stranding as a walking simulator since last year. The legendary developer, though, never came out to address the criticism, which has mostly been in humor. Following the recent Tokyo Game Show 2019 gameplay demonstration, however, he has finally decided to nip this little problem in the bud.

During an interview with Game Informer last week, Kojima was asked about the possible consequences of putting “mundane maintenance tasks” in a game. While stating those same tasks actually remove limitations of an open-world, he noted that such misunderstanding is why Death Stranding is being compared to a walking simulator.

Apparently, Kojima heard similar criticisms when the first Metal Gear was released. He explained that people tend to bash things they don’t understand. Death Stranding is a new genre and unless people experience it personally, they won’t realize how the walking simulator comparison is ignorant.

It’s the same as when I first brought out a stealth game. If 100 people play it and 100 people say it’s fun, it means the genre or the game already exists. But this is a new genre – same as stealth the first time, there will be people who don’t get it. It will take time for the real evaluations to come in.

Death Stranding has been raising questions ever since it was officially announced, which is usual for a Kojima game. Everything from the story to gameplay was presented to the public in cryptic fashion. While recent reveals have clarified few aspects, there’s still a lot that remains hidden in the shadows. Kojima believes that people will understand what Death Stranding is when they play it themselves. There’s no other way to satisfy their concerns.

Riding that same boat, Death Stranding was being teased to have some sort of multiplayer for months. It wasn’t until the recent gameplay demonstration at Tokyo Game Show 2019 that people caught clues to how the online mode would work.

Death Stranding is all about connecting societies, and its multiplayer will work in the same way. Bridged sections of the world will allow players worldwide to help each other out by leaving behind an assortment of items such as supply crates, ladders, packages, etc. You can not only use them but also acknowledge the help by giving the player Facebook-akin likes.

Death Stranding is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4 on November 8, 2019.
