Death Stranding Voidouts Guide

Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding is candy in terms of lore and details present throughout the world. A detail that we will be talking about in particular in this Death Stranding guide is Voidout. What a Voidout is, it is essentially an explosion if you will, that happens because of someone who died and wasn’t incinerated.

Death Stranding Voidouts

What a Voidout is, it is essentially an explosion if you will, that happens because of someone who got eaten by BTs or died and wasn’t incinerated.

What Causes Voidouts to Occur?

When someone in Death Stranding gets eaten by BTs (Beached Things) or dies, they have a specific time before they explode. The soul may pass on to the afterlife but the body will eventually explode.

This leaves a huge crater behind, that completely destroys nearby areas within hundred meters to ashes. Anything that gets caught by the explosion vanishes away.

Dead bodies can, however, be preserved for up to 40 hours when put on ice before they explode, but if left rotting, they will explode in 24 hours.

Since these explosions will leave a large explosion rendering an area useless for some time until they regenerate after a Timefall, Corpse Disposal Teams have been established which will bring dead bodies to incinerators. Burnt bodies will not explode.

How to Trigger Voidouts?

You can trigger a voidout by getting eaten alive by a BT. Get near to them and they will jump on to you to eat you. Once you get eaten by the BT, a voidout will occur and you will enter a phase where you have to rejoin your body.

When you have found your dead body and reconnected to it, you will spawn near the crater.

You can also kill other humans and leave their bodies at the place. They will eventually rot and explode at the place.

How to Avoid Voidouts?

Since death causes a catastrophic event, you are not allowed to kill any humans and can only stun them. You will be reloading the last checkpoint if Sam causes a Voidout.

The cause of death does not matter, once the soul passes onto the afterlife, the corpse will explode, and the only way to prevent it is to burn the lifeless body.

Due to this, players will notice how much of an emphasis is placed on incinerating bodies in the world of Death Stranding.

If dead bodies are left unchecked, they will eventually explode and severely damage the area nearby, making it inhabitable.

How to Get Rid of Void Craters?

Unfortunately, there is no way to alter the effect of the explosion and turn things back to normal. It will only regenerate naturally over time.

Within a day or two, the area affected by the voidout explosion will turn back into the land which matches the terrain of the land prior to the voidout.

Corpse voidouts play a huge part in the lore and explain why early on in the game, during Order 3, Sam is tasked with taking the President’s dead body for cremation instead of the president being buried.

Even if the president was buried, the rotting corpse will eventually explode causing a voidout.
