Cyberpunk 2077 will have its fair share of main and side quests, but there’s also another kind called street stories that often gets overlooked. These fall somewhat between the main and side quests, not really affecting the narrative but important enough to structure the world around you. They are designed to give logic to Night City by connecting the open-world content with the player.

In a recent community-orchestrated interview on the official forums, senior quest designer Philipp Weber answered several questions about how Cyberpunk 2077 manages quests. He noted that street stories are basically the bread and butter of a character like V in the game. They shape the way everyone looks at you on the streets. While other quests may also earn you street cred, it’s the street stories that involve you with everything that’s happening in Night City.

You’re supposed to find a few street stories early on in Cyberpunk 2077. However, the further you progress, your actions will determine what other streets stories you can come across. Simply put, imagine yourself walking the streets and randomly talking to someone when suddenly something happens that wouldn’t be happening otherwise. This event will be triggered due to various reasons based on your past actions or immediate surroundings, and will be a form of the world acknowledging your presence.

Weber further added that street stories flesh the world out in Cyberpunk 2077 and interestingly, was an idea that CD Projekt Red picked up fairly late into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. With a new open-world team, the studio went back at creating dynamic and fluid interactions with the world that add a level of realism unlike any other studio has done before.

In another example to understand how street stories work, we can compare Geralt with V where Geralt’s job is hunting monsters and V’s job is running the streets. In both cases, your reputation as a good monster hunter or street runner impacts the world around you. This can go many ways, as you can well imagine.

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 16, 2020.
