COD Twitch Streamer Says Modern Warfare Battle Royale Is In Development

Call of Duty streamer Montanablack88 has apparently slipped a rumor loose that an actual Modern Warfare battle royale mode is currently in development. However, he hasn’t said anything more because apparently he has an NDA that he would be violating otherwise. Because of that, we currently don’t have any details.

Despite the genre’s booming popularity with games like Fortnite and Apex Legends in the mix, Call of Duty has, so far, only had one battle royale mode among its entire series, in Call of Duty Black Ops 4 (which unlike other Call of Duty games didn’t have a singleplayer mode and was entirely multiplayer-focused).

While Call of Duty Blackout did find some success, it was quickly overshadowed by various other Battle Royale games like Apex Legends and Fortnite. A Modern Warfare battle royale mode, if it’s actually in development, would have to surpass Blackout to be competitive with the biggest games at the moment.

We can likely expect the new Call of Duty Battle Royale mode to be roughly the same as every other Battle Royale mode out there, dozens of players dropped into one map that slowly herds everyone towards the center of a large circle.

The main draw to the new mode will be what they do differently from other battle royale games. Where Fortnite has its building mechanic and wackiness and Apex Legends has its characters, Titanfall polish, and the ability to ping things for your teammates, Modern Warfare needs to have something of its own design that can draw players in.

Activision and Infinity Ward will likely be waiting for the proper time to announce a Modern Warfare battle royale, but if they’ve already let the top Call of Duty streamer in the world know about it, the mode might not be too far away from completion already. Either way, hopefully it will be able to stick around longer this time than the Blackout mode.
