Capcom Has Shelved, Not Abandoned, Deep Down

Capcom has finally confirmed the status of Deep Down, a dungeon crawler that was announced exclusively for PlayStation 4 at the start of the current generation.

Speaking with Eurogamer in a recent interview, producer Yoshinori Ono noted that all development related to the troubled game has been ceased. The original development team that was assigned all those years back has since then parted ways and Deep Down presently exists solely as a trademark.

For what it’s worth, Ono stated that Capcom hasn’t actually scrapped the project, which was supposed to be similar to the likes of Dragon’s Dogma and Dark Souls but with a lesser difficulty curve. Deep Down may as well be approved (with changes) down the road if Capcom sees an opportunity. For the time being, though, the game is as good as dead.

The original team is clearly no longer together at this point, but people might have noticed that we’ve kept the trademark registered, and it’s not been completely given up on. Every year we examine titles we’re doing in future, and we bring up projects to approve and move forward. There’s not much I can say about it, but if you’ve noticed we’ve kept the trademark it means we haven’t given up on the title completely.

Ono appeared to be disappointed with how Deep Down ended up. He added that development had actually progressed well beyond the conceptual phase before Capcom pulled the plug. His wording made it sound like there was more to Deep Down than what had been shown to the public, which is saddening since the game did look promising at the time.

Deep Down was announced in 2013 alongside a new Panta Rhei game engine that blew everyone away with amazing graphical prowess. This was when Sony debuted the PlayStation 4. However, Deep Down never saw the light of day moving forward. The game was missing from E3 2013 when early signs of development concerns began to surface.

Later on, Ono revealed that Deep Down was being changed into a free-to-play game with a slated release somewhere in 2014. In 2015, Capcom admitted to having changed plans again and the vision for the game had been expanded to better appeal long-term players. Complete silence ensued, broken by Capcom only when renewing the trademark in 2016, 2017, and most recently, in 2018.
