On Saturday, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford answered a Twitter user’s question that why Borderlands 3 for PC is going to be a 6-month Epic Store Exclusive even though Valve’s Steam is a better platform. Pitchford explains the reasoning behind the decision in a series of long tweets.
In their discussion over Twitter, LilMcFlurry argued that Steam is more popular and has better features. Pitchford responded with numerous Twitter replies, explaining that it was mostly 2K’s decision but he still stands behind it.
The series of replies are very long but we’re only discuss the major points. The whole thread can be found here and is definitely worth the read.
Why do you believe I am not listening?

Pitchford compared the features both Steam and Epic Store have to offer and agreed that the Epic Games Store currently has fewer features than Valve’s Steam.
However, he believes Epic will add more features in the future as they have highlighted in their roadmap. These features could come before the launch of Borderlands 3.
He admits although there is a chance that Epic won’t be fast enough to add more features before Borderlands 3 is launched on the platform, 2K Games are more than willing to take that risk. He also believes that the existence of the Epic Games Store will be good for customers and developers in the long run.
Epic Games has already invested a lot in improving technology like the Unreal Engine, it’s only logical that they’ll continue to do so. Valve have often invested in other business ventures as compared to Steam.
Pitchford still thinks the Epic Game Store is likely to come out on top of Valve’s Steam despite both of their respective histories.
Although things might seem rough right now for the Epic Games Store as of now, Pitchford thinks it is likely that Borderlands 3 will be the game to break the monopoly on the PC digital market, just like Half-Life 2 did for Valve in the past.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has a history of not holding back from saying what he feels. Earlier this month, Randy Pitchford told a complaining fan to “Fuck off” after having a meltdown.
Although Pitchford claims 2K made the decision to make Borderlands 3 a six-month timed Epic Games Store exclusive, many rumors suggest that developers did not support this decision.
I guess we’ll soon find out whether or not Borderlands 3 will benefit from 2K’s decision to make it an Epic Games Store timed exclusive.
Borderlands 3 will be available on September 13th for PC (Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
