New Details on Black Ops 4 Zombies: Splitscreen, Bots, Customization, Perks, and More

The undead horde returns once again with the new Black Ops 4, bearing new dangers — and surprises — for those courageous (or mad) enough to take on the challenge. Treyarch has already shared a few meaty bits about what to expect but with around two months remaining before release, the developer is all willing to share even more about the next zombie infestation.

Sony recently compiled a list of questions from the PlayStation community and sent it off to Treyarch for director Jason Blundell to answer. His responses to some of them, while short, graciously offer an additional peek behind the curtain.

The zombies mode is designed for cooperative play but players can still choose to go solo by grouping up with AI-controlled characters. However, the extent of the support is limited. The bots will (mostly) be there to accentuate dialogue and narrative elements, which has traditionally been missed. They will also not help in solving Easter Eggs or show enough awareness during heated battles. The main brunch of the gameplay will solely rely on the player.

For the couch players, there will be local support for splitscreen. There is no word on just how many players the feature will accommodate but if it goes the whole way, players should expect some degradation in visual fidelity.

The customization aspects will run deeper than just weapon attachments and the like, but the developer is not ready to reveal more at this point. On that note, players will have the option to choose their perks before starting a level. This will present the opportunity to strategize, particularly in cooperative play with friends.

There will definitely be new enemy types to take down, each having different abilities. Players will be required to adopt different methods to deal with each type. This, though, will relate to weapons being used rather than the characters wielding them.

Unfortunately, the characters introduced in Black Ops 4 Zombies are not actually classes. They were being taken as such but have been confirmed to be similar to each other in terms of combat. The only difference between them is their personalities and roles in the storyline.

Similar to how Treyarch has promised to bring back assets from past installments in the main game, the zombies mode will feature weapons in the same manner. The arsenal will be largely derived from other game modes, seeing the return of some fan-favorites and some “unique additions” as the season progresses.

Elsewhere, it was recently confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 that there will be four factions in the zombies mode: Bloodfaith, Tempus Novi, Dustborn, and the First Legion. Not much is known about them except that they will affect progress and branching storylines.

Black Ops 4 is scheduled for a worldwide release on October 12, 2018, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. There will be three zombie maps at the beginning and they will all be available on day one, a first in the Call of Duty franchise.
