With Avengers: Infinity War hitting theaters in a few weeks, co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo have started talking about the next major storyline from the comic books that they would love to adapt for the silver screen.

Speaking with Linternaute in a recent interview, the duo exclaimed great interest in the Secret Wars saga. However, this project will only became a possibility once Disney goes through with the looming acquisition for 20th Century Fox.

Similar to the Infinity Gaunt event that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been culminating for the past decade, Secret Wars features an abundance of characters from various timelines and universes — all tied together with cosmic threads. Hence, the particular storyline falls right into the domain of the Russo brothers.

“If that Fox deal goes through with Disney, there’s a lot more characters to work with all of a sudden,” said the directors. “It would be interesting to do something like Secret Wars.”

The comic books have come to feature two variants of Secret Wars — the original from 1984 and the most recent recall from a few years back. The core storyline involves a planet called Battleworld, where several alternate universes from different timelines combine as pocket universes. It should be noted that the original version was a massive crossover event, while the second take was toned down.

There is no word on what direction Marvel Studios will end up taking for “Phase Four” but based on recent reports, we could be seeing the Eternals setting up stage.

Avengers: Infinity War will open in theaters worldwide on April 27, 2018, and in China on May 11, 2018. It will be the first of a two-part series. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3, 2019.
