With the launch of Xbox One X, gamers are looking at Sony to announce or give a slightest hint about the PlayStation 5 and while the company has noted that PlayStation 4 has entered the final phase of its life cycle but still there is no word on the PS5 and according to NPD Analyst, PS5 will not launch before fall 2020.
According to NPD Analyst Mat Piscatella, PlayStation 5 will not launch before fall 2020 which falls in line with “a perfectly normal cycle length”.
I’m forecasting PS5 no earlier than fall 2020, which would mean at least 3 more holidays of big releases to enjoy on the platform, and a perfectly normal cycle length. Just because a next gen is mentioned is meaningless to the breadth and depth of content that is coming.
He further talked about the future of the game consoles noting that future consoles will see upgrades after every 1-2 year instead of after 4-7 years as it will give more benefits.
In the future I do expect pace of incremental upgrades to happen much more quickly, on a 1-2 year cycle instead of 4-7 in order to better mirror what happens in other tech lines. Lots of benefits with more frequency.
This falls in line with Earthfall developer, Collin Moore’s prediction that PlayStation 5 and next Xbox could be iterative ones instead of a completely new hardware. He further added that Sony and Microsoft might follow a formula followed by Apple for its cellphones.
Speaking of PlayStation 5, it seems that Sony is preparing to use AMD Ryzen APU for PS5. Sony’s compiler expert Simon Pilgrim who is apparently working on AMD Ryzen “znver1” microarchitecture support within the LLVM compiler stack.
Interestingly, the programmer is working on upstream LLVM improvements which unique to AMD Zen processors and Sony has no product in the market using the AMD Ryzen chip in it which might indicate that the company is running the LLVM compiler stack for the PlayStation 5.
