AMD Radeon Technologies Boss Raja Koduri Going On Break Till 2018, CEO Lisa Su Taking The Reins

Ever since AMD Vega launched, AMD Radeon Technologies Boss Raja Koduri has been silent about the launch. He updated people on Twitter saying that he was in India and was back. Now reports claim that AMD Radeon Technologies Boss Raja Koduri is going on a leave and won’t be back until next year. Meanwhile, AMD CEO Lisa Su will be stepping in to fill his shoes.

AMD RX 400 series was very successful and enabled people on a budget to experience VR. The 500 series was not all that great and the rebrand was not successful at all. The GPUs might be out of stock but that is due to the cryptocurrency mining craze. AMD Vega was supposed to be the champion and AMD’s return to the high-end GPU market.

AMD Vega was supposed to come out earlier but there were issues in HBM2 memory yield and was delayed. When it did come out, we saw that performance was not as expected and the GPUs ran hot and consumed a lot of power. Something that we are accustomed to from team Red. AMD Radeon Technologies Boss Raja Koduri addressed his colleagues in an email and the following is what he had to say:

You haven’t heard from me collectively in a while – a symptom not only of the whirlwind of launching Vega, but simply of the huge number of demands on my time since the formation of RTG. Looking back over this short period, it is an impressive view. We have delivered 6 straight quarters of double-digit growth in graphics, culminating in the launch of Vega and being back in high-performance. What we have done with Vega is unparalleled. We entered the high-end gaming, professional workstation and machine intelligence markets with Vega in a very short period of time. The demand for Vega (and Polaris!) is fantastic, and overall momentum for our graphics is strong.

Even though Koduri is a busy man it is still fishy that he just got back from India and is now going on a break. I would like to know what is really going on at AMD. He further went on to say that:

I am looking to start my time-off on Sept 25th and return in December. Thank you, all of you, for your unwavering focus, dedication and support over these past months, and for helping us to build something incredible. We are not done yet, and keep the momentum going!

Let us know what you think about AMD Radeon Technologies Boss Raja Koduri going on leave. Do you think there is something fishy going on here?
