Several months after it was originally announced, Valve announced today on Twitter that the Half-Life: Alyx release date will be on March 23 of 2020. The game was originally announced on November 21, though we still don’t know what all the game will look like when it releases as we’ve had no footage.
Half-Life: Alyx is a prequel to Valve’s original Half-Life 2 game, showing Alyx in the early days of the Combine occupation of Earth. On a mission to break into the Citadel to steal a powerful weapon, Alyx must make her way through puzzles and hazards to accomplish her objective.
A Half-Life VR game has never been done before, and this is also one of the few actual video games that Valve has developed over the past decade or two. While Valve’s Defense of the Ancients card game Artifact failed miserably, hopefully Alyx can regain the initiative.
Having the Half-Life: Alyx release date also be finally known is a good sign too, rather than keeping us guessing like they have for the past several months. While the game isn’t necessarily finished yet, even with Valve’s notorious development style it’s still on-track for release.
While the existence of Half-Life: Alyx might irk a lot of Half-Life fans that don’t have VR headsets, hopefully Alyx will be the precursor to more actual video games from Valve in the future after years of focusing exclusively on Steam. We may even get Half-Life 3 at some point.
Whether or not a new Half-Life game actually comes from Half-Life: Alyx, it’s good to know that the series is being worked on again. Since Half-Life 2: Episode 2 came out in 2007, thirteen years ago, there hasn’t been a hint of any continuation, despite many supposed leaks.
Once again, the Half-Life: Alyx release date will be on March 23, 2020, exclusively on Steam VR.
