Devil May Cry 5 Sells Another Million To Become Franchise’s Best-Seller

Just how many times does it need to be said that Capcom is finally back, and that too with a vengeance? Devil May Cry 5, having released just last year, has now surpassed the lifetime sales of Devil May Cry 4 to become both the fastest- and best-selling game in the franchise. Capcom has indeed done well.

The updated financial numbers from the official website confirm that the latest installment has sold 3.1 million units worldiwde across all supported platforms as of December 31, 2019. Devil May Cry 4 previously held this spot with 3 million units sold but that was achieved in nearly a decade. Devil May Cry 5, on the other hand, has achieved the same in less than a year.

Something worth noting is that Capcom re-released Devil May Cry 4 in the form of a special edition back in 2015. Accounting for those sales will put the game to around 4.4 million units sold, which is equally impressive. The special edition added new playable characters and was released for current-generation consoles, as well as PC. The re-release managed about 1.4 million units sold.

For Capcom, Devil May Cry 5 now sits at nineteen in its list of platinum sellers. The recent Monster Hunter: World leads the pack with a stunning 14.9 million units sold, while its Iceborn expansion raked in 3.2 million in sales. The remake of Resident Evil 2 is also another success story with 5.8 million units sold. Street Fighter 5, while an old release, currently sits at 4.1 million units sold.

Those just jumping into Devil May Cry 5 should consider some of the mods out there on PC. This one, for example, replaces V’s costume and cane with Rylo Ken’s robes and lightsaber from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The mod was much needed because since the start, players were comparing V’s likeness to the Hollywood actor. Even Hideaki Itsuno, the man behind Devil May Cry 5, stated that the similarities were uncanny when he first saw the movie in the cinema.
