Will Godfall Release on Steam?

Godfall, the upcoming 3rd person, action role-playing game was announced during the Game Awards in 2019 by Counterplay Games and Gearbox Software. It is expected to release on PC and the Playstation 5 at the end of 2020 according to their official page.

Originally, the game was meant to be released as a Playstation 5 exclusive but now it is revealed that the game will be released on PC through the Epic Games Store. This news may seem distressing to PC gamers who were hoping to buy it on Steam as there were no details mentioned about the game releasing on PC through Valve’s client.

Fans are left to speculate whether Godfall will remain exclusive to these platforms or if it will branch out for Steam.

Right now, game developers that choose the Epic Games Store for exclusivity are under contract for the duration of one full year. After this duration, games are usually available on Steam. The store has no say on how the game will be released on consoles.

Below is a chart which shows the revenue shares between the studios and the platforms:

It seems quite clear why Gearbox Software is opting for Epic Games as its platform on PC. Godfall uses the Unreal Engine. The revenue share on the Unreal Engine and the Unity Engine shows that games are far more profitable for developers if they are based on these engines and thus the choice of platforms makes sense even though Steam is by far the most popular platform on PC.

Borderlands 3, another game by Gearbox Software, saw a similar launch pattern. The game was launched on consoles and PC through Epic Games Store but is now set to release on Steam in April of 2020.

This launch pattern could very well be the same for Godfall however there is no definite information and we can merely hypothesize. The exact release date of the game is yet to be revealed but it is expected to release around the same time as the release of the Playstation 5 considering that the game is being promoted as one of the first PS5 exclusives.
