The latest data crowns Sony’s Playstation 4 as the best selling console of the decade, while Nintendo Switch topped the sales chart in 2019. The news comes from The NPD Group’s latest sales report.
It is not much of a surprise as, over the entirety of the current video game console cycle, Sony’s PS4 has been the best selling console. The PS4 has officially sold 106 million units, making it the second best-selling home console in the history of video games. Meanwhile, PS4 Dualshock 4 has been crowned as the best accessory of the decade.
Since the original Playstation, Sony has dominated the console market and proven that they are indeed the market leaders. However, Nintendo’s out of the box thinking with its every new console has given Sony some competition. The Nintendo Switch has sold 49.79 million units worldwide, and the number will continue to grow as new titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 rollout.
Moreover, the Pro Controller for the Nintendo Switch was also labeled as the best-selling accessory of the year.
However, the new data is not an optimistic read for Microsoft as Xbox One has failed to leave a mark. Since the Xbox one’s disastrous launch, Microsoft has hardly given any competition to Sony. Microsoft’s Xbox One has only sold about 40 million units globally, which the Switch crossed in a much shorter span. But with the announcement of the new Xbox Series X and a brand new strategy for the 9th generation, Xbox is eager to get back in the game.
Also, Project X Cloud gives Microsoft a big advantage over Sony, because Sony has avoided any commitment to further developing or mainstreaming PS Now. Obviously, it is still a gamble because Google Stadia’s failure has shown a lack of public interest in the platform.
Regardless, Sony has clearly won this generation and the decade and only greater things are expected from the upcoming Playstation 5.
