Take heed that Valve Index has now completely sold out across the globe. The virtual reality headset from the Steam creator was available for purchase in over thirty countries following an official release last June. However, as of today, all of those countries, except for Japan, are awaiting new batches of Valve Index (via Road to VR) before taking any further orders.
Valve is currently “working hard to build more units and meet the high demand” — hoping to restock all regions before the release of Half-Life: Alyx in March 2020. However, without a precise release date and with roughly a couple of months remaining, a likelihood remains that some regions may possibly remain sold out for the coming months.
Valve Index was steadily meeting orders for the better part of last year before early signs of problems began appearing around late November. Sales spiked all of a sudden, mostly owing to the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx. There were several reports about shipping delays in multiple countries, including the United States and Canada. Valve Index looks to have cleaned out before the end of the year. The first couple of weeks of January were probably spent meeting remaining pre-orders, leading to a complete sold out today.
At launch, Valve Index was already being hailed as one of the best virtual reality devices in the market. The headset features a 440×1600 resolution per eye as well as a 120Hz refresh rate with an experimental 144Hz mode. The headset also offers a 130 degrees field of view. In addition, Valve Index boasts stunning audio fidelity, alongside the SteamVR 2.0 sensors which are also compatible with SteamVR 1.0 base stations.
The price of the full kit (headset, controllers, base stations) is a whopping $999 USD, almost double of the $399 USD of the Oculus Rift S.
Those waiting in anticipation for Half-Life: Alyx though, will readily want to make the jump. The game marks the return of the iconic franchise after more than a decade. You will control Alyx Vance herself as she tries to save humanity by preventing an alien invasion. Recently released screenshots represent great graphical fidelity without providing any spoilers.
