Jason Schreier of Kotaku has gone on record saying that he believes that the Xbox and Playstation 5 power levels might be greater than the RTX 2080, currently the best graphics card on the market. He believes this because both Xbox and Playstation will likely want to make sure their consoles are top-tier.
PC gaming has always been one of the more high-tier aspects of video games due to the easy upgradability of a PC, which allows for greater power, resolution, and framerates. This is in contrast to consoles, which can’t be upgraded and are often separated by years between their current and next generations.
However, if what Schreier has said is true, and the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 do have more power than the RTX 2080, it’s likely that the consoles will be fairly competitive with PC graphics for at least a significant time after they release, regardless of PC upgrades.
There’s also been rumors outside of that of the possibility of mid-generation upgrades, so even if PCs catch up, they might have a lot more competition with the various consoles now. The Xbox One X was marketed as more powerful than most PCs, and seemed to own that fact, so Microsoft might be continuing that trend, hence the rumors of Xbox and Playstation 5 power.
While questions of backwards compatibility have also been asked, Schreier at least knows that the Playstation 5’s launch games will not also be available on the Playstation 4, the better to force Playstation fans to move on rather than wait in the hope that Playstation 5 games will be released for the Playstation 4 too.
While we won’t really know about Xbox and Playstation 5 power compared to the PC until the two consoles actually release, hopefully when the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 do come out during the holidays of this year.
