Microsoft and CD Projekt Red may have possibly struck a deal to have behemoth Cyberpunk 2077 release next year as part of the Xbox Game Pass program.
Recently, an advert for the popular subscription service (via AltChar) was being run by Xbox South Africa on social media. The content featured a number of upcoming games that Microsoft plans to add to the growing Xbox Game Pass library. Battletoads, CrossFire, Doom Eternal, Dying Light 2, Elden Ring, Halo Infinite, Wasteland 3, and plenty more were showcased. Cyberpunk 2077 being among them was a complete surprise for pretty much everyone.
Neither Microsoft nor CD Projekt Red has issued any statements since then. It leaves to be speculated whether the inclusion of Cyberpunk 2077 in an Xbox Game Pass advert was a mistake or something that was supposed to be kept under wraps for the time being. In either case, the video was soon taken offline but not before many had seen it for themselves.
If Xbox Game Pass does end up getting Cyberpunk 2077, it would be a huge victory for Microsoft and its subscription service. Gears 5 already proved how much Xbox Game Pass helped in sales for both Xbox One and PC. Netting a game like Cyberpunk 2077 alongside other heavy-hitters for a relatively cheap monthly fee would easily turn millions of heads. If this does goes through, Microsoft would be flashing another sign to assure that it’s putting all focus on games while heading into the next generation.
Take note that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is already confirmed to be coming to Xbox Game Pass in the coming weeks. Hence, Microsoft striking another deal with CD Projekt Red wouldn’t be out of the ordinary.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be the first game from the Witcher developer to feature an online functionality, which is why the developer wants to do it the right way the first time. The multiplayer portion won’t be available at launch and will release in the form of a free update sometime down the road. CD Projekt Red is finding an “intelligent” way to monetize the multiplayer without compromising the goodwill gained from the fan-base in the past years.
Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 16, 2020. There are no current plans to release the game on next-generation consoles as soon as they arrive in the holiday season of 2020. The developer will eventually look into PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett but not right away.
