Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales Sequel Ruled Out Indefinitely

Those who enjoyed (or are enjoying) Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales must unfortunately relinquish any hopes for a sequel. The spinoff allowed CD Projekt Red to explore the Witcher universe in a unique way by combining collectible card-based tactics with a stunning art style. The game did manage to find an audience, but not enough for the developer to return to the drawing board.

While answering questions from the community in a recent Gwent-roadmap video, senior manager PaweĊ‚ Burza confirmed that there are no plans for a follow-up to Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. The update comes unsurprising when seeing how the game was always catering a niche. Hence, despite favorable reviews, sales were reportedly below expectations. Not to mention that the PC version of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales was initially exclusive to GOG but landing on Steam down the road didn’t help matters either.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales was originally conceived as a single-player campaign for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game but was later repurposed for a standalone release in late 2018 by CD Projekt Red. Featuring five regions that were never explored before, players take control of Queen Meve, the ruler of Lyria and Rivia, during events that precede the main trilogy.

The 30-hour long campaign proved to be another testament to how CD Projekt Red can fuse an excellent narrative with an entirely different genre. In addition to the turn-based card mechanics, players had to also keep tabs on the storyline. This was because the choices made in Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales can have consequences that shift the storyline into an entirely different direction, even affecting gameplay.

For those unaware, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is at the end of its road as well. As of today, CD Projekt Red has discontinued all support for the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Any future updates and content will only release for the PC and mobile versions. With the developer moving away to focus on other projects, it also reasons why there are no plans to continue on with Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.
