BioShock 4 Has Actually Been In Development For 2 Years

Cloud Chamber has been announced as a newly founded studio under publisher 2K Games that will be working on BioShock 4 for next-generation platforms.

According to a press release forwarded by parent company Take-Two Interactive just now, Cloud Chamber “has started to work on the next iteration of the globally acclaimed BioShock franchise, which will be in development for the next several years” at least. The wordings make it sound like development of BioShock 4 has only begun and the project is in its infancy. The truth is that the much-awaited installment has been in the pipelines for at least the past two years if not more.

Kelley Gilmore is serving as the global studio head of Cloud Chamber. Heading over to her LinkedIn profile ascertains that she has been managing these duties since January 2018. In other words, Cloud Chamber was founded back then and for the past two years, the studio has been working on BioShock 4.

Does this mean that fans can expect a release pretty soon? Unlikely. Both BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite took around four years to finish. By that count, BioShock 4 should release sometime in 2021. That being said, a 2022 release window sounds more likely seeing how Take-Two Interactive mentioned “several years” for development to conclude.

BioShock 4 has already been teased a number of times. In an earnings call for the second quarter last month, Take-Two Interactive stated that some of the “biggest franchises” under the company are getting sequels. Before that, an anonymous source claiming to have gotten hold of a company document from inside 2K Games leaked several details about BioShock 4, as well as stating the installment to be in a “rather solid and advance state of development”.

If rumors are to be believed, BioShock 4 will be a direct sequel to the second installment and will continue the story of Rapture. There will be a new protagonist named Lucas, who will become involved after being accused to be the one behind the downfall of Rapture. Eleanor Lamb is possibly returning in BioShock 4 from the first two installments. She’s the daughter of Sofia Lamb and a previous Little Sister of Rapture. There are also the Lutece twins from BioShock Infinite, quantum physicists who can apparently travel through alternate universes.

Cloud Chamber will likely take its time before revealing anything about BioShock 4. However, there’s a small chance of getting a debut trailer next year.
