Something that characterized the launch of Gears 5 is that it was available not only in physical and digital format, but also debuted on par with the Microsoft Xbox Game Pass subscription service. This made many think that the sales of the game would be very few. However, the reality is that the title had a great performance not only in the service, but also in sales.
In an interview with Eurogamer in X019, Phil Spencer was questioned about the success of Gears 5 and what it means to launch a game at the same time in a traditional way as well as part of Xbox Game Pass. Given this, he revealed that despite the fact that the title was available on the service, it had significant sales to such an extent that it already exceeded those of Gears of War 4.
Phil Spencer also highlighted the availability of the game in several ways, because in the end they give players more opportunities to enjoy it and it is the players who decide how to consume the franchise, in addition to ensuring that thanks to titles like this some players will feel attracted and will start their relationship with their Xbox Game Pass service.
Gears 5 sold well for us. It sold better than Gears 4. And we feel good about it. If people want to make the choice of buying Gears, that’s an option we want to give them. I’m not trying to funnel everybody who wants to play Gears into the subscription. It’s about giving gamers choice. Certain players will make the decision as part of Game Pass that they’ll either want to start to subscribe, or they’re already a subscriber and they stay subscribed.
Right now the easiest metric to talk to Rod or anybody about the success is, how many players did we find with this game? And let the gamers choose how they actually want to get the entitlement for the game. It is an evolution, there’s no doubt. Studios have been trained that, what I look at is what are my day one sales, what are my week one sales? And as an industry, the press wants to know. Hey, how do I judge if Gears 5 has been a success? What I will say is we’re incredibly happy with Gears 5. It did review well. It has a tonne of players. We’re taking feedback on certain things. The economy – I see the feedback on the game as well. But I thought it was a great release in the Gears franchise and it drove a tonne of players who wanted to go play, and that’s awesome.
Although he did not reveal specific figures, it is important to know that the game has exceeded the total sales of Gears of War 4, which has been in the market for just over 3 years. To give a bit of context, the most recent installment of the series managed to get 3 million users during its first weekend, which we do not doubt has increased over the days.
This may not surprise many, since a few days after launch we learned that it was the most successful Xbox Game Studios title of the generation. Gears 5 is currently being a massive success on Xbox One and Windows 10. Why hasn’t the success been replicated on Steam? Will it be a new trend in the Microsoft exclusive market and will the same thing happen to Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Steam?
