There are a total of 18 Elemental Types, and many of them are weak to other Elemental Types (and some aren’t effected at all). Knowing which Pokemon is weak to which element is an important aspect of a Pokemon Battle Strategy; know your enemy and you will surely taste victory. This guide will provide an in-depth look at those 18 Elemental Types, and how they play off against one another so you have an idea of which Pokemon to add to your party.

The following are the 18 Elemental Types in Pokemon Sword and Shield

  • Fighting
  • Fire
  • Flying
  • Ghost
  • Grass
  • Ground

An element plays a vital offense and defensive role in the battle. Its ‘effectiveness’ can mean the difference between victory and defeat. An elemental attack can either be Super Effective, Reduced Effectiveness, deal Normal amount of Damage, or have no effect whatsoever.

It needs to be clarified that the Elemental Type the actual move or technique belongs to is what actually determines whether you do increased damage, or will take increased/reduced damage. If your Pokemon is weak to Psychic attacks, but the opponent’s Pokemon (a Psychic) uses a non-Psychic move, then you won’t take increased damage

A Super Effective move is one that deals twice the damage it normally would. This is stated by the game during battle – a super-effective attack is so powerful that it’s possible to one-shot an enemy with it.

However, if the other Pokemon is partially immune to the Elemental Attack, then they will take a reduced amount of damage; half of the amount of damage you would normally do.

There are some Elemental Types that cancel each other out, so to speak. They are still affected by the attack, but there is neither increased nor reduced damage; they take the amount of damage the attack is set to deliver.

Finally, some Pokemon are simply immune to that Element. A Rock-Type is not at all affected by an Electric Attack; the immunity to electricity gives the Rock-Type a great advantage, one that cannot be easily surmounted by an Electric-Type.

Now that you’re aware of how Elements play a role in Pokemon Battle, we will now go over how each of the 18 Elemental Types interact with one another.

If a Pokemon Type is not mentioned in the table below, it means that they are not affected in any way – positively or adversely – by the element, and take a normal amount of damage.

Now you’re aware of how the elements interact with one another, but there’s one more thing you to be wary of, and that’s the multi-elemental nature of your or your opponent’s Pokemon.

Depending on the dual nature of the Pokemon, it’s possible to do quadruple damage!

It’s also possible to do only a quarter of the damage you would otherwise inflict. This is purely dependent on whether both of your opponent’s Pokemon Types are highly susceptible to your Pokemon’s Elemental Type – and vice versa.

For example, an Electric Type is super effective against both Water and Flying-Types, so if your enemy ends up being both, then an Electric-Type Attack will do 4 times the damage.

If your opponent ends up being an Electric and Dragon-Type, then an Electric Type-Attack will do reduced damage – a quarter of the total damage you would normally deal.

If it’s the case of the Pokemon having one Type that’s highly susceptible, and the other type being slightly resistant, then there will be no difference and you’ll inflict the normal amount of damage.

However, if a Pokemon has a Type that’s immune, then that Pokemon, in its entirety is immune to those Types of attacks, regardless of whether the other type is susceptible or not.

That’s all the related information to Elemental, Type Effectiveness and Pokemon Sword and Shield Type Chart.
