There have been so many rumors and speculations about Blizzard working on Diablo 2 Remastered in the past couple of years. For a time, Blizzard even came close to teasing the said project by lumping it together with a possible remaster of Warcraft 3, which incidentally came true in the form of Warcraft 3: Reforged. Prior to BlizzCon 2019, a potential announcement of Diablo 2 Remastered began making rounds as well. Diablo 4 was eventually the one in the spotlight — no regrets. However, going back now, it comes to light that Blizzard has probably canned Diablo 2 Remastered, at least for the near future.
The realization stems from an anonymous source that pretty much nailed Diablo 4 on Reddit nearly four months before Blizzard made the official announcement.
Every claim put forth was obviously taken lightly back then but the leak turned out to be authentic. Diablo 4 was indeed shown at BlizzCon 2019. The sequel is indeed darker in style. Barbarian and Druid have indeed return. The part about revamped combat with combos and social hubs inside of towns came true as well. However, the really interesting thing to note here is that the same anonymous source also mentioned a little something about Diablo 2 Remastered.
Diablo II Remake/Remaster was planned, but they later realized that it would be much better to give the franchise a complete reset and put majority of the fans requests into 1 giant package.
Blizzard apparently switched gears when it came to Diablo 2 Remastered. Development was indeed ongoing but the developer ultimately decided that rather than remaster or remake the decades-old game, it would be far better to channel all of those ideas into a direct sequel. Hence, Diablo 4 took the reins away from Diablo 2 Remastered.
There’s obviously no proof yet but seeing how most of the leak came true, the rest of the leak is likely to be true as well. The notion makes sense as well. Diablo 4 really appears to be going back to its roots by taking all of the good from Diablo 2 and adding modern-day improvements on-top. There would be no point in releasing Diablo 2 Remastered around the highly anticipated sequel.
That’s not saying that the remaster has been completely scrapped. It’s only been shelved. Blizzard is likely to bring out Diablo 2 Remastered just to appease fans in the future. All focus, though, will understandably remain on Diablo 4.
Diablo 4 is still a long way off, with a speculated launch in 2021. PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC have been confirmed to be the destined platforms. However, Blizzard is likely eying the next-generation consoles as well. On that note, the developer has shown great interest in supporting cross-play for Diablo 4. Hopefully, the feature makes it this time. It didn’t did with Diablo 3.
