Tomonobu Itagaki is one of the most iconic figures in the video game industry and with good reason. The producer behind Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive may have been out of active development for a long time but he recently hinted that “he’ll be back soon”. This might be a lowkey confirmation that we’ll see him during XO19.
Itagaki has become known for his creative work on Ninja Gaiden as a producer and director, creating a persona that became emblematic back in the day. His last shipped title was in 2015 with Devil’s Third as a director and since then he was working for Valhalla Game Studios. In 2017 he took over as an advisor within the studio, a position perfect for him since he wants to move more developers with his work and ambition. Back then, he said:
“With the passing of my 50th birthday as a personal milestone, I will put into effect a change that I have been planning for some time, changing my place and purpose in the game development industry. I wish to contribute as much as I can to the game development industry as a whole and help it to grow by passing on my own method of development, my own method of creating games, to those who would like to work with me.
Many believed that this would be the end of an era and we might not see Itagaki again in action. However, that is bound to change. At least, that’s what he hints through his personal Facebook profile, saying that he’s sorry he’s been away and we’ll see him soon.
The sunglass man is hinting his comeback and we couldn’t be more excited. With X019 coming on November 14th, it would be a perfect time for him to be back with news on how his advisor’s process went on and what his prodigee developers are working on. Could it be a new Ninja Gaiden? Or a completely new IP under his supervision?
Undeniably, X019 will hold a bunch of surprises for fans. Microsoft has recognized that they have to step up their game and release more exclusive titles. This along with the fact that this will most likely be the event where we’ll see Xbox Scarlett for the first time is a grand opportunity. It’s only 10 days until we know for sure but, for now, the future looks bright for Xbox.
