At E3 2018, it was announced that studio Ninja Theory, the same group behind the critically acclaimed Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, would be holding back their upcoming game Bleeding Edge until XO19, in order to help build hype for the title. Bleeding Edge was first announced at E3 this year by Microsoft.
Bleeding Edge is a multiplayer combat game that appears to take inspiration from Overwatch and other hero shooters, but with a noted difference, mainly in that it’s focused around melee combat instead. Considering that Ninja Theory’s catalogue includes games like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Hellblade, DMC: Devil May Cry, and Heavenly Sword, other melee-focused games, the studio is playing to their strengths.
The game’s combat mainly focuses around matches between teams of four, with twelve characters in the initial roster. Each character, with a different size and different weapon of their own, promises a lot of different ways to tackle your opponents.
Of course, waiting until XO19 to do announce anything new with the game is definitely odd, especially since other major gaming events like Gamescom have already passed. XO19 will be taking place in London from November 14 to November 16, and will be entirely Xbox-focused.
Considering that Ninja Theory is now an Xbox-owned studio, that means that they won’t have any other games from competing platforms to face off against, though it still means they’ll have to work to get people excited about Bleeding Edge.
With how well Hellblade did when it was announced, the studio will likely be riding high off of that success, and if they can make Bleeding Edge look appealing to people who are bored of “normal” team shooters, they could have another hit on their hands.
Once again, you can keep up with Microsoft on November 14 to November 16 to watch XO19 for yourself. Bleeding Edge will be coming out at some point in the future, but we don’t have a concrete date yet. However, we’ll likely be seeing one soon.
