Fairy Tail is the next in line to be getting the JRPG treatment from GUST Studios, as announced by Koei Tecmo at Tokyo Game Show 2019 earlier in the month. The publisher has now released more details to convince manga and anime fans alike why this adaptation warrants their attention.
There will be over ten playable characters at launch, with possibly more additions being done down the road through post-release expansion packs. Koei Tecmo hasn’t provided a complete list as of yet but based on the reveal trailers, the following characters are pretty much confirmed at this point: Erza Scarlet, Wendy Marvell, Natsu Dragneel, Gray Fullbuster, Lucy Heartfilia, Jellal Fernandes, and even the guild master himself, Makarov Dreyar.
The gameplay will mostly be based around taking requests from your guild, completing them, and using the rewards to help your guild grow. Your progression will unlock various facilities inside the guild, details of which are pending but one of them is called a Research Laboratory — perhaps a way to enhance your characters?
As for combat, this Fairy Tail JRPG is being developed by the developer of Atelier and Nights of Azure after all. Hence, expect several similarities. GUST Studios has reportedly integrated an improved battle system that’s “highly strategic” for turned-based combat. However, without a proper gameplay reveal, it has to be all taken at face value for now.
Coming to the storyline, the Fairy Tail JRPG will be following the anime and will start right after the seven-year time-skip. For those unaware, this is the arc where most of the Fairy Tail guild members were frozen in time on Tenrou Island. They were eventually freed but after seven long years had passed. In addition to the main anime chapters, the game will also have original stories for you to enjoy.
Finally, it has been confirmed that Hiro Mashima, original creator of the Fairy Tail manga and anime, is collaborating with GUST Studios to supervise the characters and content. This should put fans at ease, provided that the developer listens to the man.
The Fairy Tail JRPG is slated to release for PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2020. There’s no word on an Xbox One version. Koei Tecmo will hopefully be dropping more details in the coming weeks. There are still more characters to be revealed, gameplay footage, and such.
