Koei Tecmo Announces Fairy Tail JRPG For 2020

Fairy Tail, the best-selling Japanese manga and anime of the same name by Hiro Mashima, is getting the JRPG treatment from Koei Tecmo. The announcement is a bit premature as the publisher intends to drop the meaty bits at Tokyo Game Show 2019 next week. Until then, there’s a teaser trailer and minor details for you to enjoy that should get you aboard the hype train.

Koei Tecmo describes the adaptation as a cross between magic, guild, and role-playing mechanics. This will be the first time that a Fairy Tail game launches on all major consoles in the west, which is always a rare feat for a JRPG. The publisher believes that this move will allow fans of the franchise and newcomers alike to join in and experience the beloved long-running narrative.

GUST Studios is the one leading development, known for its exceptional work on franchises like Atelier and Nights of Azure. The name alone should make it clear that this JRPG take on Fairy Tail is in the right hands. If not, then know that Mashima himself is working with the developer to promise a faithful recreation.

According to the official blurb, wizards (that’s you) will start their journey in the land of Fiore and play through the adventures of the main cast as well as other eccentric members of the Fairy Tail guild. The teaser trailer confirms characters like Natsu Dragneel, Gray Fullbuster, Lucy Heartfilia, Erza Scarlet, Wendy Marvell, and Jellal Fernandes. It’s a given that the most evil and immortal mage, Zeref Dragneel, will be involved in the narrative in some capacity.

The Fairy Tail JRPG is slated to release for PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2020. There’s no word on an Xbox One version. Koei Tecmo will be doing a full reveal at Tokyo Game Show 2019 on September 15, 2019. The panel will feature producers Hisashi Koinuma and Keisuke Kikuchi, as well as others. You can follow the event’s YouTube page right here.

Speaking of the annual Japanese convention, the entire stage schedule is up. In addition to Fairy Tail, Koei Tecmo will be showcasing Nioh 2 and participating in the 20th Anniversary special of One Piece.
