The decision to change Shenmue 3 into an Epic Games Store exclusive mere months before release was only the first mistake. The second was refusing refunds to fuming backers who funded the Kickstarter project nearly half a decade ago. Thankfully, the developer has managed to find its moral compass.
According to an update sent out just now, Ys Net is finally ready (and willing) to honor those refunds. The developer will start sending out emails mid-September with the option to either change your platform from PC to PlayStation 4 or ask for your money back. If you opt for the latter, take note that the refunding process could take from one to three months in total. You only have two weeks to decide after receiving the email, after which you’ll be stuck with Shenmue 3 on PC.
Refunds will be honored for backers who had selected a PC version and are not satisfied with the proposed reward options.
The same update also provided clarification on the in-game rewards. Basically, there’s a high chance that the rewards tied to Shenmue 3 will not be removed for backers who request refunds. This is because production of the in-game rewards is already underway and changing that is difficult (and risky) at this stage of development. Ys Net has asked for your cooperation in this regard.
For those not opting for refunds, the trial version of Shenmue 3 is on track to arrive in the second half of September. It’ll last for around an hour and take place in the first area, Bailu Village. There will be some sort of replay value, meaning that you’ll want to go through the chapter once again for various activities until the trial period expires. Ys Net has not mentioned what these will be, but an announcement is expected soon.
Shenmue 3 is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4 and PC on November 19, 2019. Once again, the game will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
