Star Wars Battlefront 2 Rebound Comes Despite DICE Constantly Revisiting Launch

EA DICE's Star Wars Battlefront 2 rebound makes devs wonder how the game would have been received without lootboxes when it first launched.

It’s never an easy thing for a studio to launch a game that’s controversial right out the gate, but unfortunately EA DICE got that experience back in 2017 with Star Wars Battlefront 2. While these days a Star Wars Battlefront 2 rebound is in progress, many DICE employees still find themselves wondering.

Wondering, for the most part, about how the game would have been received if they hadn’t pushed out the microtransactions alongside the game. Microtransactions were originally supposed to launch along with the new Star Wars title, but huge online backlash caused them to pull it, rumored to be on Disney’s order.

The microtransactions that had originally been planned would have locked a number of the game’s most popular heroes, such as Darth Vader, the Millennium Falcon, and more, behind a rather expensive paywall, especially since they were supposed to be microtransactions.

The entire debacle, in addition to drastically impacting Battlefront 2’s launch sales, also opened up debates around the world about microtransactions in general, with multiple legislative bodies in multiple countries calling for them to be banned as gambling tools.

Nowadays, the Star Wars Battlefront 2 rebound seems all the stronger. Numerous free updates add more content to the game every few months, including new heroes, new planets, new game modes, and now things like various skins and cosmetic devices.

Most recently, players will get a new special unit in the form of the Clone Commando, a new map on the planet Felucia, new single-player content in the form of Instant Action and a co-op PVE multiplayer mode, along with new content for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker coming in December.

DICE has contented itself with the Star Wars Battlefront 2 rebound by thinking about Rainbow Six Siege, which had a similarly dodgy launch but is now one of the most popular online team-based shooters out there.

As for the rest of you, keep an eye on the updates from Battlefront 2 to see when all of the new content ends up coming out.
