Netflix Witcher Series Will Explore Yennefer’s Character Alongside Main Story

Now that we’ve finally gotten a trailer for the Netflix Witcher series this past weekend at San Diego Comic Con, we’re finally getting more information about everything that will be happening. For instance, Lauren Hissrich, the showrunner, said we’ll be going into detail on Yennefer of Vengerberg, Geralt’s love interest.

One of the many sorceresses that Geralt runs into throughout the books and games, Yennefer of Vengerberg has had a rough life, having been born a deformed hunchback with an abusive home life originally before gaining the beauty that most gamers are familiar with through her sorcery training.

In the books, most of Yennefer’s backstory is told in flashbacks, but in the Netflix Witcher series, we’ll be learning more about her and seeing her as she grows from a scared hunchback into the beautiful woman that she becomes.

Alongside this, the Witcher series will be a straight adaptation of the books that were written by Andrezj Sapkowski, and were originally made into the highly popular Witcher games, where most of the buzz for the franchise likely came from.

Focusing on Yennefer’s character and backstory also allows the series to push back against fan critics that had been upset about the fact that the show had cast a colored actress for Yennefer, which had previously driven Hissrich off of social media due to harassment and threats.

While there could be any number of reasons for the backlash, ranging from characters used to seeing the game’s pale-skinned, raven-haired version of Yennefer, or concerns that using minorities would strip the series of the Slavic heritage, Hissrich has said that the Netflix Witcher series doesn’t intend that at all.

However, don’t expect to not see Geralt doing what he does best in the series. While Yennefer’s backstory will be getting a large role, there are still going to be plenty of the inter-kingdom politics and monster fights that we’re familiar with.

There’s still no date for when the Witcher series will be added to Netflix, but hopefully since we got a trailer at Comic Con it can’t be too much farther away.
