Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot Will Be Rated-R And Will Have Gory Fatalities

It seems these couple of years are going to be big for Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat 11 was well-received and did pretty well in terms of sales. Apart from the game universe, Mortal Kombat is also set to come on the big screen. A new Mortal Kombat movie has been in production for quite some time now. According to Mortal Kombat’s screenwriter, Greg Russo, the movie will be rated-R and will not shy away from gory fatalities.

This new Mortal Kombat is touted to serve as a reboot of the movie universe. Of course, we all remember the iconic Mortal Kombat theme song from the original 1995 movie. There have been quite a few Mortal Kombat movies and frankly speaking, none of them were that good. This is why a need was felt for a reboot as far as the movies were concerned.

Way back in September of 2011, New Line Cinema (the holder of Mortal Kombat’s rights) and Warner Brothers (the current holder of the franchise’s rights), got into discussions with Kevin Tancharoen to direct an R-Rated Mortal Kombat movie. The film suffered a bit of a delay spanning a couple of years.

The movie’s director, Tancharoen, quit in order to focus on “Mortal Kombat: Legacy” web series. In August 2015, James Wan signed on as producer. Then in November 2016, Simon McQuoid was hired as director for this R-Rated Mortal Kombat movie.

Back in February, Greg Russo announced on his Twitter page that the script is complete. After that, the R-Rated Mortal Kombat movie went into pre-production with shooting scheduled to begin in South Australia soon.

Just a few days ago, it was revealed that actor and martial artist Joe Taslim will be playing Sub-Zero in the movie. If you didn’t know, Taslim is best known for his breakthrough role as “Jaka” in the critically acclaimed The Raid (2011). After that, he went on to play “Jah” in Fast & Furious 6 (2013). Taslim is clearly talented and is a perfect fit for Sub-Zero. You can expect a lot of deadly fatalities from Taslim in the R-Rated Mortal Kombat movie.

The Rated-R Mortal Kombat reboot movie is currently in production with an estimated release date for March 5, 2021. You can also play NetherRealm Studio’s Mortal Kombat 11 with the update version 1.06 which is live now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
