A new rumor suggests that there is a new Tron open-world role-playing game in production with a 2021 release date. The rumor in question surfaced on Reddit just yesterday and then caught fire. It suggests that there is a new Tron game in development primarily for next-gen consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett. Even though the details about this supposed Tron game are very scarce right now, the rumor does suggest a 2021 release date.
Another thing the rumor suggests is that this new Tron game will have an open-world setting with RPG elements as well as online components. If this is true, it sounds like an excellent premise for the cyber world of Tron.
The 2010 Tron: Legacy, directed by Joseph Kosinski, was perhaps the best Tron entertainment we ever got. The film grossed almost 400 million USD on the box office and is still considered to be one of the most aesthetic and visually pleasing movies to date. The film was shot in IMAX and featured a soundtrack by Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo.
Tron: Legacy also gave birth to a tie-in video game “Tron: Evolution”, which was developed by Propaganda Games and published by Disney Interactive for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable, and PC.
Tron: Evolution featured a third person perspective. Its core gameplay mechanics revolved around racing on light cycles, acrobatics, and close quarter melee combat. Evolution also featured parkour, RPG elements, and a character progression system that allowed players to unlock new levels and upgrades, both in multiplayer and singleplayer.
Back in 2016, we also saw some early build footage of a canceled Tron game that was being developed by studio “Day 1” titled TR2N: Liberation. The rumor also suggests that this game has been in production for three years now. If a studio picked up TR2N: Liberation and started work on it, then this Tron game does fit the time scale.
However, this rumor about a new open-world RPG Tron in production is somewhat shady. The rumor doesn’t mention anything about any studio or publisher. All it says is that the game is an open-world RPG with a 2021 release date for next-gen consoles. This lack of information makes the rumor somewhat hard to believe. Which is why you should take it with a grain of salt.
