Next Gran Turismo is In Works, Polyphony Digital CEO Confirms

Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi has now officially confirmed that the next Gran Turismo title is in works. It's a complete form of Gran Turismo.

Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi has now officially confirmed that the next Gran Turismo title is in development. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Polyphony Digital studio had some interesting things to talk about the future of the series recently.

Speaking to GT Planet, Kazunori Yamauchi said that he has learned a lot from recent traveling and World Tours. These various world tours have given him some ideas about what to do in the next Gran Turismo title.

Having done all these World Tours, it gave me the opportunity to feel the history of Gran Turismo. It gives me pointers and hints of the things we should make sure that we do in the future of the series, Yamauchi said.

Yamauchi then continued to confirm that a new Gran Turismo game is in works. He didn’t confirm if the next Gran Turismo title is a new Gran Turismo Sport title or a sequel to Gran Turismo 6. However, Yamauchi did say that the next title will be a complete form of Gran Turismo. “I think the next title that we’re going to create will be a combination of the past, present, and future–a complete form of Gran Turismo”, he said.

Given the rumors that PS5 will launch in 2020, it’s safe to assume that the next Gran Turismo will release on Sony’s next-generation and more powerful hardware.

Yamauchi admitted that the next-generation hardware will help them deliver better quality experiences. Afterward, he expressed that he’s a believer of PlayStation VR.

I don’t think that there’s anything else that requires that much processing power. I really like VR; I’m one to believe in the possibilities of it, and it’s very suited for a driving game.

With that said, it’s safe to assume that the next Gran Turismo title (maybe Gran Turismo 7) will be a PlayStation 5 and PS VR exclusive.

The latest entry in Gran Turismo franchise is Gran Turismo Sport, which was released in 2017 and is still supported by Polyphony Digital studio.

Gran Turismo Sport Update 1.40 is now available for download on the PS4. The latest update brings new cars to the game along with Sardegna road course. Aside from that, Polyphony Digital has announced via a trailer that wet weather effects will be added to the game in a future update. Players can check out the video below to see the wet weather effects.

As for the next Gran Turismo title, we can expect Polyphony Digital and Sony to talk about it during PlayStation Experience, which is scheduled to take place at the end of 2019.
