In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, President of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda spoke extensively about the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game and what Crystal Dynamics, Marvel, and Square Enix hope to achieve with it. The developers compare Avengers to Insomniac’s Spider-Man for PS4 and hope to be as successful.
Spider-Man was a huge title and a major success, so we would like to work hard to have that kind of success. So I guess it did increase my expectations [for Avengers]. I do believe you have to have high goals. I thought that Spider-Man was fantastic, but we don’t want to be bested by them. We are working very hard on the development effort right now so that we are able to provide a new experience.
When the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game was shown at E3 2019 during Square Enix’s press conference, it was met with a mixed reception. Some loved the idea of playing as multiple Avengers in a totally new story that is separate from the MCU Avengers. Some disliked it for its somewhat wonky character designs and stiff gameplay. In a way, the Marvel’s Avengers showcase received similar feedback as Insomniac’s Spider-Man.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean that Marvel’s Avengers will be a bad game. When Insomniac’s Spider-Man was first revealed at E3 2016, it too was criticized. A lot of people didn’t like what Insomniac did with Spider-Man’s new suit design. The white spider logo at the chest and back was massively different from what fans had seen in movies and games at that time. Even Yuri Lowenthal’s voice as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the narration was new. Just like Insomniac’s Spider-Man PS4, Marvel’s Avengers has also gotten a similar response.
Of course, at E3 2017, we got an in-depth gameplay trailer which showed off the stealth, combat, swinging mechanics as well as a lot of QTE (Quick Time Events) based action. It was one of the best trailers we got at E3 2017 and arguably one of the best game trailers of all time. So it is likely Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix will show off an in-depth Avengers trailer later down the road which fans will like more than what we saw at E3 2019.
Interestingly, Crystal Dynamics has considered including Insomniac’s Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers. This is very likely to happen as we got to see a handful of Avengers Easter Eggs and references in Spider-Man PS4. If not in full form, we might just get a few mentions and nods to Spider-Man in Avengers.
Marvel’s Avengers video game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix, it has a March 15th, 2020 release date for PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC.
