Mike Pondsmith Weighs In On Cyberpunk 2077 Racism and Sexism Debacle

Cyberpunk 2077 covers a large dystopian society in Night City. This means there will be a lot of cultures and other forms of representation. Is any of this diversity meant to be offensive though? Many think it is especially after the poster controversy.

But the controversy doesn’t stop there. Many are now offended the representation of Black and Haitian people in Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk 2077 diversity comes in the form of districts with different groups of people. The two groups shown at E3 2019 in are the “Animals” and the “Voodoo Boys” gang.

The creator of Cyberpunk 2077, Mike Pondersmith, shared his thoughts on Reddit. Besides making the universe itself, he was heavily involved with CD Projekt Red. He mentioned how he hates being told how to develop a game based on the universe he himself created. He also expressed annoyance in people being offended for him while he himself as a “black man” is perfectly OK with Cyberpunk 2077.

People did take offense to this, as usual, saying it is stereotyping of these people. The majority of people offended by the Animals and the Voodoos weren’t Black or Haitian. In fact, a Haitian fan’s reaction to Cyberpunk 2077 is absolutely amazing.

This was what he had to say on Reddit:

“Want to say this just once. I am really tired of well-meaning people on internet chat boards paternalistically telling me what I, as a black person, should be offended by. You want to be my ally? Go gird up your loins and at this year’s Thanksgiving dinner, have the nerve to tell your racist Uncle Bob to STFU for a change”

He was absolutely full of glee to see his people included in a AAA game like Cyberpunk 2077. He said he understood every dialogue delivered in his language in the Cyberpunk 2077 demo. It seems people wish to be offended for other races. Everyone expect Black and Haitian people seem to be offended by this which is coming off as pure virtue signaling at the moment. Whatever it is, we will leave it up to you to decide.

Cyberpunk 2077 comes out on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in May 2020.
