Gears Of War Movie Is Heading In The Wrong Direction

Gears Of War is one of those mainstream gaming franchises that’s now getting a movie adaption. Although the Gears of War movie is still far away, we know a bit more about it now. What we know mainly is that the movie is non-canon to the video game series.

The Gears of War movie will be taking place in an alternate reality which isn’t the best way to go in my opinion. This was confirmed by studio head Rod Fergusson when asked by IGN about the movie premise. Here’s what he had to say:

In order for the movie to be successful, it has to be a great movie first and a Gears movie second. Basically, the way that we sort of reconciled that was, we said, ‘oh the movie should be an alternate reality. It should not be dependent on the game story, nor should it influence the game story.

This does allow the directors of the movie a lot more creative room but it may affect fan-service which is one of the most crucial elements. Does it slightly separate the movie from the video game series? Why even call it a Gears of War movie if it’s not canon and set in a completely different reality with different characters and story.

Dave Bautista as Marcus Fenix

Despite being in an alternate reality, it’s still the same universe. We can expect to see characters and locations from the video games. Dave Bautista even expressed interest in wanting to play Marcus but will Marcus even be in the movie? Unlikely.

As I said before, the Gears of War movie release date is still pretty far away. It’s been in the making since 2016 so maybe it’s not too far. We also have the Uncharted movie to look forward to in 2020.

Gears of War isn’t the first franchise who’s movie is non-canon to the games. The Resident Evil movies are a prime example of a rather successful movie series based on video games. They are unrelated to the Capcom video games outside of character appearances.
