New Rare Studios IP In The Making, Possibly For The Xbox Scarlett

A new Rare Studios IP is apparently in the making, and might very well make its way onto the Xbox Scarlett. Xbox bigwig Phil Spencer announced the new IP some time ago, mentioning it while talking about Rare’s previous offering, Sea of Thieves. But what is it about? Who knows.

Rare Studios has had a bit of a checkered history for the past few years. Despite being seen as a maker of a wide variety of classic games due to it making games like Donkey Kong and Banjo-Kazooie, the studio’s fortunes shifted years ago.

Various games that were attempted ended up not working out, and an attempt at revitalizing Banjo in the form of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts was critically bashed. However, Rare recently jumped back into the spotlight with the release of Sea of Thieves.

While the game has gotten some criticism for being bare of content, Rare has continued to push out new ways for players in it to have fun, and released Rare Replay back in 2015, a collection of every game that the studio had released across its 30-year history.

We don’t exactly know what the new Rare Studios IP might end up being, but there are a few possibilities. During E3, Nintendo announced that Banjo and Kazooie would be one of the new fighters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, so that might hint at a new attempt to revitalize the series.

However, there’s also the possibility that, like Sea of Thieves, the new Rare game could be something entirely new. As Rare Replay showed us, Rare has never been short of ideas in spite of all the sequels to its most classic games.

Either way, we’ll likely find out about the new Rare Studios IP at some point in the near future. Hopefully it will be something that can really revitalize the studios, without the rough growing period that Sea of Thieves had.
