Marvel’s Avengers is a single player and a four-player multiplayer game but its campaign is single player only. Crystal Dynamics lead combat designer Vincent Napoli and lead creative director Shaun Escayg confirmed this bit in an interview with IGN.
Explaining further, Crystal Dynamics developers revealed that Avengers game multiplayer is only available within the side missions. Side missions can be unlocked by progressing through the single-player campaign and can be played solo.
In other words, you can play all the game’s missions by yourself. Also, players can choose to play with any Avengers in these side missions. That means if you want to do all missions with Hulk and level him up, you can do that.
As for the Avengers game side missions, they do have a little story of their own and fit into the main campaign. Players will be able to enjoy the game with their friends but unfortunately not the main campaign.
Given how the game has an online component, it will feature microtransactions at launch as well.
Shaun Escayg confirmed microtransactions recently by revealing that the players will able to purchase different custom outfits for their favorite heroes in Avengers Project. Players can rest easy as these microtransactions will not affect Marvel’s Avengers gameplay. There are no loot boxes or pay-to-win mechanics though.
Marvel’s Avengers was officially announced at E3 2019 with this trailer:
Marvel’s Avengers game is set to release on May 15, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Avengers Project is in development across different studios like Eidos Montreal, Crystal Dynamics, Crystal Northwest Studio, Nixxes Software, Marvel Games, and Square Enix.
