Elden Ring Gameplay Is Inspired By Dark Souls But Is Different From Sekiro

Elden Ring is the latest game in development by From Software, the studio is known best for Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. We got to see a very cryptic, mysterious yet beautiful teaser during Microsoft’s E3 2019 press conference. Since it is being developed by the same studio, the question is how much of the same gameplay elements are carried onto Elden Ring ?

In an interview with IGN, Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that Elden Ring will feature some vivid elements of Dark Souls.

“Elden Ring is a third-person action RPG with a fantasy setting. Gameplay-wise, it’s heavily based on Dark Souls,” says Miyazaki. “However, that doesn’t mean that it plays out in the same way. With a more open and vast environment, the way combat plays out becomes fundamentally different.

According to Miyazaki, FromSoftware is taking the same kind of narrative approach as Dark Souls. Dark Souls tells a lot of its story vaguely through its environmental design. This is something a lot of players can miss in their initial playthrough. This subtle way of storytelling is something From Software is carrying on in Elden Ring.

While other RPGs of a similar nature take the approach of telling their stories through elaborate towns, taverns, cities and campaign missions, Elden Ring is trying to do something different with its gameplay.

Creating a new type of game is a big challenge for us. If we would add towns on top of that, it would become a bit too much, so we decided to create an open world style game focused on what we are best at.

In a separate interview with Xbox, Miyazaki talked more about when and how FromSoftware started working on Elden Ring.

Development for Elden Ring started just after development for the Dark Souls 3 DLC had ended. At the time, Elden Ring was being planned as a more classic fantasy title compared to others that were either being considered or already in the early stages of development.

Miyazak also talked about the theme FromSoftware are going for by trying something different in Elden Ring. “It is a third-person action RPG,” he said.

Unlike Sekiro, which has a heavy focus on action, Elden Ring puts more focus on RPG elements.

He elaborated by saying:

Of course, we are not shying away from the fun of responsive melee-based combat, and these elements will be present as well.

Dark Souls and Sekiro are well-known for their challenging boss fights. Miyazaki explains that the same struggle to overcome obstacles that existed in previous FromSoftware games are carried on in Elder Ring.

He also explained that similar to the Dark Souls games, Elden Ring’s gameplay will also feature character customization elements while retaining its focus on RPG mechanics.

So far, Elden Ring definitely sounds promising. Elder Ring is being developed by FromSoftware with Bandai Namco publishing it for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC and a December 31, 2020 release date.
