Square Enix’s new Marvel’s Avengers game was one of the best things we got to see at E3 2019. New gameplay footage of Marvel’s Avengers game has been leaked online thanks to a behind the closed door demo.
During Square Enix’s E3 2019 press conference, the developer showed off the A-day trailer for Marvel’s Avengers game. Even though the Avengers trailer Square Enix showed mostly consisted of “in-game engine” cutscenes, fans were left aching to see what the gameplay will be like.
Luckily, Square Enix also showed off gameplay behind closed doors to certain attendees of E3 2019. The gameplay consisted of what appears to be the first level of the Avengers game. Now, even though the leaked gameplay looks like it has been shot through a camera from the 1940s, we examined it very carefully. There is a lot of interesting stuff in the gameplay.
It is to be noted that leaked YouTube video is likely to be taken down due to copyright from Marvel Entertainment. The best thing to do is to watch it while you can.
Luckily, the leaked Avengers gameplay is also available on Reddit just in case.
To understand the gameplay, we first need to understand where and when it’s taking place:
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own Helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation.
After an explosion goes off on the San Francisco Bridge, Thor and Iron Man rush off to the location. There are enemies everywhere on the bridge and both of our heroes get to work. This is where the leaked Avengers gameplay starts.
Iron Man Gameplay:
Iron Man arrives on the bridge, instructs civilians to take cover, and starts fighting off enemies. Right now we don’t know what these enemies exactly are. However, we can see that they appear to carry energy based weapons.
Iron Man has a mixture of both melee based attacks along with his signature repulsor beams. Tony appears to punch close-up and use his repulsor beams in long-ranged attacks. Iron Man can also fly while in combat, this is excellent since it adds a bit of vertical variety to the combat. He can also dodge projectiles by using his thrust mechanics from his suit.
Even though the video gets overexposed, we can see what appears to be his chest Unibeam in action when he takes out a bunch of hostiles simultaneously.
Iron Man also takes out an enemy vehicle that has some sort of energy-based weapon turret mounted on top.
The game then switches to Hulk who can charge at enemies and deal damage while running. He can also leap and jump over obstacles. Not exactly Spider-Man level of parkour but it gets the job done. The video again gets overexposed at this point but Hulk does what appear to be a series of punches and kicks to an enemy vehicle. Hulk is also capable of grabbing entire vehicles and using them to his advantage.
We later see Hulk wall jump so you can expect this segment to consist of some platforming. Hulk only speaks through grunts opposed to what we saw in Thor Ragnarok and Avengers Endgame. This appears to be a chase segment where Hulk needs to destroy something while moving forward.
Captain America Gameplay:
After this, a cutscene takes place where Thor and Iron Man argue. The gameplay then switches over to Captain America. We see some shield based gameplay. Cap is able to use his shield for both defense and offense. He is able to throw his shield at enemies for long-ranged attacks and use them as a weapon in close quarters.
Black Widow Gameplay:
After a series of cutscenes, we are back again on the bridge playing as Natasha Romanov, Black Widow. She appears to be chasing what appears to be Task Master. We get to see a chase segment similar to Uncharted. It is a quick time event and Black Widow manages to deal damage to him in the air.
After landing, Black Widow shoots her guns at the enemy. She is also capable of melee based attacks such as punches and kicks as well as acrobatic dodging. This appears to be a short boss fight.
A cutscene takes place right after the boss fight. An explosion takes place on a ship. It is unclear whether this is the helicarier or an enemy ship. This segment was also featured in the official reveal trailer. Black Widow tries to get in contact with Captain America via radio but fails since he was on board the ship.
This is where the 12 minute-leaked Avengers gameplay ends. There is still a lot to be broken down and analyzed. This is essentially the first act of the Avengers story arc. From what we have seen, Avengers truly seems interesting.
It is similar to Insomniac’s Spider-Man PS4 in a lot of ways but it is definitely bringing something new to the table by switching between different Avengers. It wouldn’t be so far-fetched to expect a Spider-Man appearance in the game.
Marvel’s Avengers video game has a March 15th, 2020 release date for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Pre-orders for the game are open on Square Enix’s website. The game will also be available on Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Live Marketplace.
