NPCs are returning in Fallout 76 with Wastelanders update. These NPCs will be fully voiced and will have full-fledged dialogue trees. Not only that, romance is also returning to Fallout 76 along with NPCs.
Project lead Jeff Gardiner confirmed that players will be able to romance with NPCs following the launch of Fallout 76 Wastelanders.
However, don’t expect romance scenes to be explicit. If history is any indication, the romance will only be limited to words as Fallout games never featured sex scene.
While romance options aren’t as deep and explicit but the interaction with the NPCs will be more fleshed-out compared to previous Fallout games. Also, NPCs can help players in the open-world but, don’t expect that you will be able to recruit them as companions. According to Jeff Gardiner:
The dialogue trees you saw have even more options than you did in Fallout 4 – we’re going back to more like Fallout 3, where you’re going to be able to use your SPECIAL stats to influence people.
Fallout 76 launched last year with abysmal reception from critics and gamers alike due to a plethora of bug, glitches, crashes, technical issues, and reused assets from Skyrim and Fallout 4.
Lack of any NPC in the game’s world was also a strong negative for the game. Now, it seems that Bethesda really took the criticism to heart and is making good on its promise and will be releasing updates based on player feedback.
What is more interesting is that just a few days before E3 2019, Todd Howard admitted that Bethesda knew that Fallout 76 was never going to succeed and they launched a broken game anyway. He also admitted that Fallout 76 did cause a hit on Bethesda’s reputation.
Despite all the criticism, Bethesda kept on defending Fallout 76 to no avail. It took them almost 8 months to get the game in a state in which players enjoy playing it.
Fallout 76 is an open-world multiplayer game developed by Bethesda for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
