Is CD Projekt RED transphobic or is the studio trying to make a point? CD Projekt RED revealed the ray-tracing feature recently and in the reveal video fans noticed a trans poster.
The poster is an ad for a drink and features a hypersexualized trans person. People sensitive to this issue immediately jumped on CD Projekt RED to explain itself.
After backlash from a vocal minority, CD Projekt RED had to respond to clear things up. According to game director, Kasia Redesiuk represents the overreach of advertising from dystopian profit hungry megacorporations.
The company made it clear that it is not a joke at the expense of transgenders.
Hypersexualization is apparent everywhere. and in our ads, there are many examples of hypersexualized women, hypersexualized men, and hypersexualized people in between.
This is all to show that [much like in our modern world], hypersexualization in advertisements is just terrible. It was a conscious choice on our end to show that in this world — a world where you are a cyberpunk, a person fighting against corporations. That [advertisement] is what you’re fighting against.
I think that sexy bodies are sexy. Full disclosure: I love female bodies. I love male bodies. I love bodies in between. This is who I am. However, I hate it when it’s used commercially. And that’s exactly what we want to show by doing this, by showing how big corporations use people’s bodies against them
Dystopian mega corporations aside even megacorporations of today use members of the LGBTQ community for profit. The gay pride was recently used for profit. Brand generate millions from the LGBTQ community during the gay pride month. However, little to no money we spend on brands supporting the cause is donated to help the community.
Millions go into their fat pockets and what good does that do to the LGBTQ cause? Symbolic support for the sake of generating money off of these people in what mega-corporations do and Cyberpunk 2077 shows how far they can go in the future.
In fact, this is one of the things you are fighting in the game, according to CD Projekt RED. Your fight is against megacorporations and their questionable actions.
While not to this extreme but we are in fact living in a reality where corporations engage in such tactics.
