Another controversy is brewing thanks to Epic’s Fortnite money which it keeps throwing around at developers. Shenmue 3 development team has made a deal with Epic Games Store and ditched Steam. That wouldn’t have been an issue if the development team hadn’t promised to bring Shenmue 3 on Steam. The PC Gaming Show brought the bad news which was later shared on the game’s official Kickstarter page.
The PC Gaming Show just wrapped up with some big news for Shenmue III. The new trailer was unveiled and it was announced Shenmue III for PC will be an Epic Games Store exclusive!
At E3 2019 Shenmue 3 Epic Store exclusivity was confirmed and fans didn’t like it one bit. The Kickstarter backers immediately started asking for their money back. Sadly, no one will get their money back according to Ys Net.
The launch was previously planned for distribution on Steam, however it was decided together with Deep Silver after much discussion that the Epic Games Store would be the best distribution platform option.
Shenmue III will be distributed through the Epic Games Store and will require the Epic Games Store client to activate.
We apologize for the sudden change in platform, however, refunds will not be granted for this change.
We than you for you support and look forward to delivering the Shenmue experience fans everywhere have been waiting so long for.
Helpless fans were promised Shenmue 3 Steam keys for the past 4-years. Backers are rallying to mass report this project to Kickstarter. However, at this point nothing really matters; the deal is done and it is highly unlikely there will be refunds.
Why Does This Make Sense?
Shenmue, although a great franchise, isn’t the most popular in the world. It might do good enough financially to break even or make a little profit but no one is expecting it to have record-breaking sales. Releasing Shenmue 3 on Steam means cutting down profits 30% and handing it over to Valve. Epic Games Store on the hand not only takes just 12% revenue but also gives an upfront payment for exclusivity.
While it made business sense for Deep Silver and Ys Net to profit early, it is definitely going to result in a PR nightmare.
