Bullet penetration in games isn’t as common as one would like to think, even in 2019 games don’t support this feature very often. But at least we do have the technology to implement bullet penetration. Thanks to efficient and powerful hardware, games can simulate how bullets can pass through and destroy materials such as wood, metal, and glass. We have seen this happen in games like Rainbow Six Siege. And now, Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019 will also feature realistic bullet penetration.
In an interview with PCGamesN, Jacob Minkoff, Infinity Ward’s campaign gameplay director for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 talked extensively about bullet penetration.
“There are certain types of materials you will be able to break through,” he explained. Minkoff explained that while players will be able to break through flimsy weaker materials like cardboard or hollow, wood-veneer doors, they won’t be able to do that with tougher materials like metal, brick or solid wood.
Minkoff added that bullet penetration also depends on external factors such as bullet caliber, rate of fire, the type of gun, and distance. Furthermore, the game has a very specific penetration value that will determine how far a round will travel once it strikes a surface in the level geometry. Some materials will cause the bullet to slow down after penetration just like in real life.
“When you see the guy who gets shot through the wall in Townhouse, that kind of thing is everywhere in the game,” Minkoff said.
Of course, Minkoff was referring to the Townhouse level we saw in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reveal.
“There are doors that you can’t shoot apart too, so we had to go and design a visual language for the doors that you can and can’t destroy,” said Infinity Ward’s art director Joel Emslie who worked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
That work has paid off, he said, by adding an interesting layer of complexity.
I would say one of the best parts of the experience is bullet penetration. Just looking at the soft cover and knowing that if you can shoot through it, so can your enemy – it’s a nice part of the gameplay.
Infinity Ward also recently revealed that Call of Duty Modern Warfare is also going to feature cross-play across several platforms for multiplayer matches.
