PS5 Will Have Even More Exclusive Games Than PS4

Microsoft has been investing in and acquiring first party studios, it seems Sony is trying to go on a similar route by announcing PlayStation’s plans to invest in its own line of first-party studios to boost PS5 exclusive games library.

Yesterday, Sony held its Corporate Strategy Meeting in Tokyo for the fiscal year 2019. During the meeting, Sony reviewed 2018 and discussed future Business Segment Initiatives for this year.

One of the key points of this meeting was discussing PlayStation’s investments for 2019. President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, stated that PlayStation is planning on making some major investments in its line-up of first-party studios “through organic growth and acquisitions” as the PlayStation 5 release date draws closer.

Of course, this strategy can benefit PS5’s games library and Sony in a number of ways. The major one being this will instantly add new games to PS5’s library. It has been almost 7 years since Sony purchased a first-party studio. The last one was Sucker Punch way back in 2011.

Sucker Punch Studios developed the inFAMOUS series which of course Sony profited a lot from. It is still considered one of the best action games of all time. Sucker Punch is now working on the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima exclusively for PS4.

Just quite recently, Former PlayStation America Head Jack Tretton said that Sony will face a tremendous amount of competition with the next-gen PlayStation 5. If Sony manages to invest in first-party studios on time, then adding new games to PlayStation 5’s library might just give Sony another competitive edge over other companies such as Microsoft and Google Stadia.

It will be interesting to see just how fruitful this strategy turns out for Sony and PlayStation. It is likely we will see further updates regarding this in the upcoming months after E3 2019.
