Death Stranding Release Date News, Norman Reedus, Gameplay, Trailers, Conan O’Brien Leaks, and More

Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of Metal Gear Solid games, left Konami to create a new game. The title known as Death Stranding is currently in development at the independent Kojima Productions. Sony is funding the IP and will help publish the first Kojima Productions game. Moving on, Hideo Kojima will work on non-exclusive games. Even though there were rumors of a PC version of Death Stranding, Sony owns the IP.

And what an IP this is? The most mysterious game to even be developed under the Kojima banner. We hardly know anything for sure about Death Stranding even though the game has been discussed multiple times by Kojima and The Walking Dead Star Norman Reedus who is the lead in Death Stranding.

What is Death Stranding? It is hard to define what this game is about. There are sci-fi elements but there are also elements of horror. It seems like a mix between Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill. In fact, one of the theories suggests Death Stranding is, in fact, Silent Hills. Hideo Kojima has been playing up the mysterious nature of the game by revealing as little as possible.

But through this article, we will try to get a better idea what Death Stranding is as we go over every little detail shared so far.

Death Stranding  Release Date, News Rumors, Speculations, Reports, Story, and Leaks

Death Stranding is a Hideo Kojima game in development at Kojima Productions. The developers are using the Decima Engine which is a modified version of Guerrilla Games’ in-house engine. We have seen the engine in action already. Horizon Zero Dawn is created using the Decima Engine.

The game has been in development for almost 4 years. Players will be able to play the game in the next two years. It is rumored that Death Stranding is a next-generation game. The official description for Death Standing reads:

Sam Bridges must brave a world utterly transformed by the Death Stranding. Carrying the stranded remnants of the future in his hands, Sam embarks on a journey to reunite the shattered world one step at a time. What is the mystery of the Death Stranding? What will Sam discover on the road ahead? A genre-defining gameplay experience holds these answers and more.

A genre-defining game? Kojima sure knows how to hype it up.

Death Stranding Release Date – When Is The Game Coming Out?

Update: Hideo Kojima has confirmed that Death Stranding release date is November 8, 2019. The game is releasing sooner than most of us expected it to come out. There are so many questions after the new gameplay trailer dropped but at least we now have when is Death Stranding coming out.

For the time being there is no release date for Death Stranding. Hideo Kojima nor Sony have mentioned a release date for Death Stranding. Back in 2016, Kojima told fans that Death Stranding will release before 2019, and we know that didn’t happen.

In an interview with Dengeki PlayStation, Hideo Kojima said that development of Death Stranding is going pretty well. In fact, he recalled Sony execs saying they had never seen a game being created at such a fast pace. And now it’s been four years. “We are planning an announcement that will further surprise everyone in 2018,” said Kojima. And we are half way into 2019 with no Death Stranding news. There was an explanation released by Kojima Productions blaming the 2018 developer strikes for the delay in development.

Amazon UK leaked release date of March 29. It gave players hope that we will be seeing Death Stranding soon but the date came and went.

According to Aki Saito, head of marketing and communications at Kojima Productions:

Death Stranding is not yet in the debugging stage, but is currently having all the game elements and tools from different development systems combined into the game. It’s a process that involves connecting the parts, adding feeling, looking over the production, the specifications, looking out for trouble, taking things out and adding things in. I’m playing the game on PlayStation 4 every day. It’s a critical phase.

There are those hoping to see the game in 2019 but in a recent Tweet by Hideo Kojima, the game will take a while so it won’t be released in 2019. But the wait is going to be worth it for sure. Speaking of Tweets, Rez creator and Tetris Effect producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi recently saw a build of Death Stranding and Tweeted out to the world.

In his Tweet, he called the game “stunning” and adding in Japanese that it is great. Hideo Kojima has been teasing a new trailer for Death Stranding. We expect the footage to arrive in a month or two so we can also see how “stunning” this game actually is.

Death Stranding Trailers — All Available Footage

Update: A new Death Stranding trailer has dropped, finally giving us a look at gameplay. There is seems to be very few combat sections and more

The very first time we saw Death Stranding was when a trailer dropped at E3 2016. The trailer was over almost 4-minutes long but gave nothing away. E3 2016 trailer only showed the game’s protagonist played by Norman Reedus.

It took almost a year for Kojima to show up in public at The Game Awards 2018 and reveal a gameplay trailer for Death Stranding. This time Death Stranding gameplay elements were shown which gave us a vague idea of what this game is.

But the most exciting trailer came our way at E3 2018 when Troy Baker joined the voice acting cast of Death Stranding. Troy is apparently playing one of the antagonists of the game. However, since we don’t have any news from Kojima nothing can be said about his role for sure.

Apart from Troy Baker, Hannibal starts Mads Mickelson is playing a role in Death Stranding as well. His involvement in the project was announced via The Game Awards 2016.

Hideo Kojima is Preparing a New Trailer — The mad genius known as Hideo Kojima was seen teasing a new trailer for Death Stranding. His Twitter page shared an image of him standing next to a monitor with Death Stranding’s title card. It looked like he is editing a new trailer. Sony is skipping E3 2019 so we don’t know when exactly Kojima will drop this new trailer. Hopefully, it will end up revealing more about the game instead of adding to the mystery.

He posted something similar back in April as well but removed his post.

Development is Progressing — While trailers may have not been a good source of information about Death Stranding, Kojima’s Twitter definitely is. In March 2019, the legendary developer shared a Tweet to update his fans. According to him, the game is in a “critical phase” of its development.

Death Stranding is not yet in the debugging stage but is currently having all the game elements and tools from different development systems combined into the game. It’s a process that involves connecting the parts, adding feeling, looking over the production, the specifications, looking out for trouble, taking things out and adding things in.

I’m playing the game on PlayStation 4 every day. It’s a critical phase.

Everything From Tribeca Film Festival — Among the many cryptic themes of Death Stranding, one of them is anti-nuclear war, according to Kojima.

The genre of Death Stranding as described by Hideo Kojima himself is an open-world action game. He emphasizes, however, that it’s something new and the connectivity of the internet is heavily incorporated.

At the event, Kojima mentions the FOBs from Phantom Pain and says aspects of that will also be in Death Stranding.

Kojima described some sort of camera manipulation functionality but didn’t go further into explaining it.

Norman Reedus confirmed that the game will have violence. He added, however, that it goes much deeper than just killing people. All Reedus said about his character is that he’ll have “multiple toys”

Norman also added that some scenes he did are his all-time favorite performances. Death Stranding is very heavy on the detail. Kojima even went as far as adding Norman Reedus’ actual tattoos in the game through body scans.

You’re allowed to move freely within the game. This freedom of movement isn’t connected to story progression, however. Kojima emphasized that he wanted to give players the freedom of how they do the story.

Regarding how emotional the game will be, Reedus affirmed that people will get very emotionally invested in the game. He also described that the character played by Mads Mikkelson is very intense.

Kojima adds that real-world connections do exist in the game, specifically referencing Europe.

How Story Works? — The story is linear and while players will have to make some tough decisions, there are no branching narratives. Your choices and decisions will not impact the outcome. All of them will be through pre-defined cut-scenes and dialogues.

Death Stranding is Edgy — Back in 2015, Hideo Kojima talked about his upcoming game and tried to hint at things to come. He couldn’t share much as he was still a part of Konami working on Metal Gear Solid 5. However, he did reveal that his upcoming game is a bit edgy. He explained how he wants “to create something that’s what people expect” but also wants to bring “something new that people haven’t seen before.”

Most plans to do something different with Death Stranding’s mechanics, mainly with how death works in video games. According to Kojima, gameplay mechanics of Death Stranding were inspired by a Japanese short story.

He compared the story to stick and ropes. The first tool mankind created was a stick for protection following it up with a rope to keep things close and secure. Most of your tools in action games are sticks, Kojima said. “You punch or you shoot or you kick.” The interaction is always through the sticks.

In [Death Stranding], I want people to be connected not through sticks, but through what would be the equivalent of ropes… But of course, you will be able to use the sticks too.

Death Stranding is a mystery that not even the game’s developers understood for some time. According to Kojima, when he started explaining the game to his team, “on one got it.”

Same happened to Mads Mikkelson, he didn’t understand what the plot the is.

Challenging the Concept of Death — Death Stranding will have a different take on death. According to Hideo Kojima, players won’t die in the game. The underwater sequence we saw in one of the trailers showed Sam submerged. It is speculated that this sequence will trigger every time the player dies, it is kind of a purgatory where players can freely explore when they are dead in the game. Kojima stated that death will never pull you out of the game.

The Time Rain — Another weird concept we saw back at E3 2018 is the time rain.  The time rain makes human bodies age, and plants grow. We don’t know what it is and why it has that effect on humans and objects.

How Are the Babies Connected to Everything? — One of the recurring elements in the videos we have seen are the babies, probably the same baby multiple times appeared. Norman Reedus cradled a baby nude on the beech, Del Toro summoned the baby, and Norman Reedus has one living inside his throat. The baby seems to be a major part of the overarching plot. The baby can warn your character when there is a threat nearby.

Cetacean Stranding Theory — While Kojima has been silent about the game’s story, the internet has been theorizing about what this game could be. One of the theories revolves around the term “Cetacean stranding” which described an event where aquatic wildlife strands itself on dry land due to lack of salt water.

This can be linked to the title of the game and all the dead wildlife we have seen in Death Stranding trailers.

The Baby Awakens Theory — If you sync the first and second trailer together, the baby awakens in the second trailer exactly the moment it vanishes from the first trailer. It seems the baby is connected to various characters and it is speculated that Del Toro’s character steals the baby from Sam.

Death Stranding is Silent Hills — There is a very interesting theory out there that suggests Death Stranding is actually the canceled Silent Hills game. YouTuber Python SelkanHD has done a number of interesting videos on the topic.

The Conan O’Brien Skit — Recently, The Tonight Show Host Conan O’Brien visited Hideo Kojima’s studio and later during a Q&A session with fans, he was asked about his visit to the studio. Brien stated that whatever Hideo Kojima is working on is out of this world. Brien’s team did shoot some stuff at Kojima Productions but they can’t share it just yet.

He explained that Death Stranding’s release date is too far away. They can not show their Kojima Productions bit until the go-ahead from Sony and Kojima Productions.

They are working on a very top secret video game, it’s called Death Stranding. And no one is allowed to know anything about it. I mean they have released a few clips here and there but it’s top secret and we shot there and it’s another world. But we can’t show anything yet because it’s too far from when the game is coming out. It’s one of those things that are just out there, we have launched it, and it’s going to zip-in at the right time. Everyone is going to freak out!

His comments lined up with the delay of Death Stranding’s release date and news drops.

Death Stranding is a next-generation game that will release on PlayStation 5. However, the title will be a cross-gen game so expect it on PS4 and PS4 Pro as well. The release date of Death Stranding is set within the next two years. Lets what Hideo Kojima and Norman Reedus have in store for us.

We will be updating the article as soon as we have more information about the game.
