Super Smash Bros Ultimate Sales Hit Benchmark To Make It Best-Selling Fighting Game Ever

Nintendo has announced a new benchmark hit in Super Smash Bros Ultimate sales. The company has reported that the Smash Bros sales have contributed to the company having its best financial year since 2009. Some have even claimed that Super Smash Bros Ultimate is now the best-selling fighting game ever.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate lives up to its name, with the game including every single fighter and every single map from past Super Smash Bros games, ranging from classics like Link, Fox, and Kirby to Solid Snake, Palutena, and Ganondorf.

New Super Smash Bros characters have also been added to the game, such as Incineroar, Ken from Street Fighter, and most recently Joker, the protagonist from Persona 5, who is the first of multiple DLC fighters that will be coming to the game in the future.

Nintendo has reported that Super Smash Bros Ultimate sales have hit an unprecedented 13.81 million copies ever since it released last December. This puts the game ahead of the last two highest-selling fighting games on the market, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Mortal Kombat X.

Super Smash Bros Brawl sales managed to hit 13.30 million copies sold in its lifetime, while Mortal Kombat X ended up selling 10 million. The fact that Super Smash Bros Ultimate sales passed this over the course of just four months, and got a million of that its first week, speaks to how popular it is with the fanbase. For instance, Joker was such a popular character that the day he released, fans crashed the eShop servers.

Nintendo profits both in terms of Super Smash Bros Ultimate being the best-selling fighting game, and other titles, are even more meaningful considering its fairly dismal performance in the previous console generation. Despite coming out with a number of popular games for the Wii U, the console’s poor performance put the company in a bad spot financially.

When the Nintendo Switch launched in March of 2017, it was an immediate success, and its meteoric rise has caused Nintendo to have its best year since 2009. If you haven’t picked up Super Smash Bros Ultimate for yourself, you can contribute to the game’s sales by buying it now for the Nintendo Switch.
